What is chai?
Chai is a black Darjeeling tea from India with exotic spices added and served in a milk base like a latte.
What is the history of chai?
Chai’s history is well over 5000 years old. The milk based beverage has traditionally been prepared hot and cold. Its roots can be traced back to India and related to the Hindu natural healing system called “ayurveda” in which combinations of spices, herbs and sweeteners are used to cure bodily ailments. South Asian and Middle Eastern cultures have enjoyed chai for centuries. Now popular in many other regions of the world, especially the US, chai tea is now enjoyed hot, iced, and blended.
What does chai taste like?
Creamy and comforting! Kind of like a flavored hot chocolate, only with vanilla and cinnamon. Some people say that our Traditional Spiced Chai tastes like Pumpkin Pie in a cup.
Does chai have caffeine?
Chai has very little caffeine, but what it does have is cardamom, which is a spice that is a mental stimulant. So you stimulate your mind, without the coffee jitters. For those who absolutely cannot have caffeine, Kataluma Chai carries a decaf in the traditional spice flavor.
Why is chai better?
Some of the ingredients in Chai have been reported to have some interesting qualities:
GINGER-is said to be very cleansing and balancing for the digestive system. Many use ginger to help relieve nausea and body aches related to colds and flu. It is also said to be helpful to the respiratory system.
CARDAMOM-is said to stimulate the mind and give clarity without the jitters normally associated with coffee.
CLOVES-are said to invigorate and help generate heat in the body.
CINNAMON-is said to be good for the circulatory system and to enable other herbs and spices to work faster.
HONEY-has been used throughout the centuries to help support the immune system.
VANILLA-has a tendency to be very calming and soothing.
How do you make the perfect cup?
Simply use 1 ounce (approximately two rounded tablespoon) of Kataluma Chai mix for every 6 ounces of hot milk or milk substitute (i.e. soy milk) then top with whip cream and the sprinkles we include in the Kataluma Chai mix. Water can be used, but for the true Kataluma experience milk or a milk substitute is recommended.
